EHDS  ·  REGULATION (EU) 2025/327  ·  FIRST DEADLINES 2029

EHDS readiness alongside your current system.

The European Health Data Space (EHDS) brings new obligations for healthcare. The first legal deadlines are in 2029, and the full data set by 2031. Saumo reads your data from your current system, maps it to FHIR R4 and shares it under control. It never writes to your patient record system.

THE PROBLEM

The obligations are coming. Systems change slowly.

The EHDS applies to everyone who produces or stores patient data. Many organisations recognise these three things.

Illustration: scattered documents, folders and files in many formats, not connected to each other.

01

Data comes in many formats

Patient data sits in different systems and formats: documents, interfaces and spreadsheet exports. The EHDS expects key data to be available in a common European format.

02

Replacing a system takes years

Renewing a patient record system ties up staff and budget for a long time. There is less time to the first deadlines than a typical procurement and rollout takes.

03

Patient rights get stronger

Patients gain the right to see their data electronically and to restrict its use. Every access must be monitored and logged.

HOW SAUMO WORKS

Read, map, share. Nothing is written to your patient record system.

Saumo is a read-only data layer beside your current system. The original system stays as it is.

01  ·  READ

Read

Saumo reads data from your current system: CDA R2 documents, FHIR R4 interfaces and spreadsheet exports. It never writes to the original system.

02  ·  MAP

Map

AI suggests how the data maps to FHIR R4 structures. A person reviews and approves the mapping before the data is used.

03  ·  SHARE

Share

Data is stored in repositories with access control, monitoring and an access log. Applications read it through an interface based on an open standard.

WHO IT IS FOR

For organisations that hold patient data

Saumo suits anyone who needs to get existing data moving, under control.

COUNTIES

Wellbeing services counties

One data layer beside several systems. Preparation can start without touching the current system.

HOSPITALS

Hospitals

Specialised care data in a common format. Access rights and the access log stay in your hands.

PRIVATE PROVIDERS

Private healthcare providers

Private providers store patient data too. Saumo helps you prepare without a heavy project.

EHR VENDORS

Health IT and EHR vendors

Offer your customers a FHIR R4 data layer beside your own product, without rebuilding its core.

WHY NOW

Decisions for 2027 are made this autumn

No need to invent urgency. A look at the calendar is enough.

Timeline: EHDS milestones in 2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031 shown as growing squares.
  1. 2027

    Budgets are being set now

Finnish wellbeing services counties and hospitals prepare their 2027 budgets this autumn. If EHDS preparation starts next year, the funding should be reserved now.

  2. 2029

    First legal deadlines

The patient summary, ePrescriptions and eDispensations come first, on 26 March 2029. The full data set follows by 26 March 2031.

  3. Now

    Change takes time

Mapping data sources, a data protection impact assessment, testing and training all happen before anything goes live. Start in good time.

FAQ

Questions about the EHDS and Saumo

Cannot find the answer? Write to [email protected].

What is the EHDS?

The European Health Data Space (EHDS) is EU Regulation (EU) 2025/327. It gives patients the right to access their health data electronically and sets common rules for exchanging health data and for its secondary use.

When do the obligations start?

The Regulation entered into force on 26 March 2025 and applies from 26 March 2027. The first legal deadlines are in 2029, and the full data set by 2031.

Do we have to replace our patient record system?

Not necessarily. Saumo works beside your current system and only reads its data. It never writes to the original system.

Does the EHDS require FHIR?

The Regulation does not name a technical standard. The Commission sets the European exchange format by implementing act. Saumo is FHIR R4 native, aligned to the HL7 Europe Base and Core profiles STU 2.0, and tracks the balloted European Patient Summary guide.

Where is the data processed?

Data is processed in Finland. Every access is recorded in the access log.

What does the EHDS review include?

A 30-minute remote meeting. We go through your data sources, the timeline and the first steps. The review does not commit you to anything.

NEXT STEP

Let us start with your data sources.

Book a 30-minute EHDS review. We go through where your data comes from, what the Regulation requires and in which order to proceed.
